INTERIM APPOINTMENTS MADE IN UAF'S MANAGEMENT TEAM AS SENIOR OFFICIALS RETIRE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 26, 1998

Fairbanks, Alaska — University of Alaska Fairbanks Chancellor Joan Wadlow has appointed Frank Williams, director of the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center, and Carla Kirts, dean of students, as interim Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services and Interim Vice Chancellor for University Relations and Advancement respectively.

Williams replaces current administrative services Vice Chancellor Mike Rice, while Kirts replaces university relations and advancement Vice Chancellor Karen Cedzo. Both interim appointments are in addition to Williams' and Kirts' current positions and become effective June 1, 1998, the date both Rice and Cedzo retire from UAF.

According to Wadlow, the interim appointments assure continued senior level management and experience to guide UAF through a transition in top leadership posts.

"It facilitates flexibility during periods of rapid change and also provides an opportunity to look closely at the relationship between budgeting and planning," Wadlow said. "This period also enables us to review the most effective way of organizing our marketing and public relations efforts, including enrollment."

Wadlow also noted that the units to be managed by interim leaders are well-organized and very capable of getting their work done with limited oversight.

"These units need little supervision and have been responsive to change over the years as the university has faced a growing range of financial challenges," Wadlow said.

Rice has been at UAF since 1983 and Cedzo since 1979
