SUBJECT Annual Fall Percussion Concert
LOCATION Charles W. Davis Concert Hall, UAF campus.
DATE & TIME Oct. 17, 8 p.m.
The Charles W. Davis Concert Hall will be reverberating with the syncopated sounds of percussion ensembles Friday, Oct. 17 during a fall concert featuring special guest artist Layne Redmond, a noted New York City hand drum specialist, author and lecturer. Redmond's historical review of pre-Christian Middle Eastern drumming "When Drummers Were Women" is currently in release throughout the U.S. The concert will also premiere UAF's new steel drum ensembles, formed this summer with money donated from the local community.
The evening will consist of two parts. The first includes performances by Redman, the Hand Drumming Ensemble, the Improvisation Ensemble, the Classical Percussion Ensemble and the steel drums. Later in the evening, an improvisational multimedia performance is featured with noted poet and UAF professor Peggy Shumaker reading from her work and UAF art professor Bill Brody presenting a computer-animated video. Additionally, guest artist Sara Wilbourne, a modern dancer from Santa Cruz, Calif., will be performing along with members of Fairbanks' Dance Omnium during the multimedia event.
Admission is $5 at the door and children under 12 are admitted free.
