UAF COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAM NATIONALLY SANCTIONED

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 19, 1997

Fairbanks, Alaska - The computer science curriculum at the University of Alaska Fairbanks has earned reaccreditation from the national Computing Sciences Accreditation Commission. The program was first accredited in 1991, the only in Alaska to do so, and is one of only 151 CSAC-accredited programs in the country.

UAF's computer science program is offered through the College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics. There are about 60 undergraduates and about 20 graduate students in the program.

"Reaccreditation speaks to the quality of our faculty and the quality of education our students receive," said Clif Lando, head of the department of mathematical sciences. "It demonstrates that our program is well designed and effective because it meets rigorous, national standards established by the CSAC."

CSAC is sanctioned by the country's two largest scholarly and professional societies for computing, the Association for Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers - Computer Society, and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the specialized accrediting agency for computing sciences in the U.S.
