SUBJECT: Usibelli Winner Establishes Art Scholarship
DATE & TIME: June 4, 1997
A $10,000 endowed scholarship has been established for students studying art at the University of Alaska Fairbanks by UAF art professor Kes Woodward, his wife Missy and the UAF Chancellor's Matching Grant Fund.
The $5,000 contribution for the new scholarship comes in part from money Woodward received as a 1997 Emil Usibelli Distinguished Service Award recipient, given to individuals who display extraordinary excellence in teaching, research and public service at UAF. Woodward, who has been with UAF since 1982, was selected for his efforts to promote the arts in Alaska.
The scholarship was named in memory of Kes' mother, Bebe Helen Kneece Woodward, who died of cancer last year. The Chancellor's Matching Grant Program was created in January. Undesignated private funds are used to match contributions made by individuals and groups. To date, more than $50,000 in new funding for student scholarships has been raised.
