SUBJECT: "Terms of Engagement-Alaska Natives and Higher Education"
LOCATION: Wood Center Ballroom, UAF Fairbanks Campus
DATE & TIME: March 11, 1997; 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.
UAF's Faculty Senate is inaugurating a series of seminars highlighting the academic contributions and scholarly achievement of university professors. The first of the series, "Terms of Engagement, Alaska Natives and Higher Education," is planned for 4:30 p.m., March 11 at the Wood Center Ballroom. College of Rural Alaska professors Ray Barnhardt and Oscar Kawagley will lead the seminar.
Barnhardt most recently was a Fulbright Fellowship consultant with the University of Akureyri in Iceland and has worked with Kawagley on a variety of rural education issues. Both are involved in raising the profile and improving UAF's role in meeting the needs of the Alaska native community.
According to faculty senate member Rich Seifert, many people are unaware of the contribution and activities of UAF professors beyond the classroom. "Often faculty take sabbaticals, get promoted or retire without ever getting an opportunity to describe their work to their peers, the rest of the university and the community."
The seminar will be followed by a reception at 5:30 p.m. in the adjacent Wood Center Conference Rooms C and D. The public is invited to attend the free seminar and the reception which follows.
