The accomplishments of federally funded education programs known collectively as TRIO will be highlighted at a reception at UAF's Wood Center Ballroom, Wednesday, Feb. 19. Alaska Sen. Lyman Hoffman has been named Outstanding TRIO Alumnus for his accomplishments as a former Upward Bound student, he is unable to attend the reception to receive his award.

Federally funded TRIO programs at UAF include Student Support Services Project, Educational Talent Search, McNair Scholars, Educational Opportunity Center, Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math/Science Regional Center. TRIO services aim to increase student motivation as well as improve student retention and success rates.

The Wednesday afternoon reception will reunite current and former TRIO students and staff. TRIO students at UAF will be recognized for outstanding academic performance. Diane Preston, counselor/coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities, will receive a Friend of TRIO Award for her collaboration and commitment to meeting the needs of disabled students. Other activities on TRIO Day will include all-day information and recruitment tables at Wood Center.

Combined, TRIO programs at UAF provide educational opportunities to about 400 students yearly who are low income, first generation college student or are disabled. Student Support Services Project offers academic courses, free tutoring, advising and personal support to currently enrolled college students. Upward Bound works with high school students during the summer months to better prepare them for college.
