UAF SCHOLARSHIPS UP AND ONLINE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 14, 2001
Fairbanks, Alaska Privately funded scholarships at the University
of Alaska Fairbanks are up from past years and, for the first time ever,
students can apply online.
Scholarship awards to UAF students for 2001-02 are expected to reach
the half-million dollar mark, the latest in a list of steady increases.
In 2000-01, $487,967 was awarded to 312 UAF students compared with $416,508
awarded to 285 students in 1999-2000 and $360,514 awarded to 252 students
in 1998-99.
UAFs fund-raising office has long recognized that a strong financial aid program, especially the scholarship pool, is essential to student recruitment and retention. Although scholarship dollars are up overall, student financial needs continue to increase. In addition, some academic programs in the liberal arts, mathematics and computer science and vocational majors taught at UAFs Tanana Valley Campus are still in need. Currently, the top five privately funded scholarships available for students who qualify include:
- Fred A. Kubon and Inez M. Kubon Scholarship, open to students in the School of Mineral Engineering degree programs including mining engineering, geological engineering and petroleum engineering: $32,000.
- Clarence Berry Fellowship in Mining and Resources, open to graduate students in the School of Mineral Engineering including mineral engineering, geology, geological engineering, or natural resources management or pursuing studies that meet fellowship purpose: $20,000.
- Mikami Scholarship, open to sophomores and juniors in any field of study: $16,000.
- Gray S. & Lola C. Tilly Scholarship, open to juniors, seniors and graduate students in any field of study: $16,000.
- Betty Ross Mattson Scholarship, open to nursing students: $15,500.
The application deadline for students to apply for scholarships for the
2002-03 academic year is February 15, 2002. For a complete list of the
nearly 250 scholarships available visit http://www.uaf.edu/giving/scholarships.
Scholarships are managed through the UA Foundation.
