SUBJECT:            UAF Presents Open House on Master Planning

LOCATION:          Noel Wien Library

DATE & TIME:     Sept. 25, 2001 from 4:30 — 6:30 p.m.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Master Planning committee will unveil a draft plan of the university campus of the future at the Noel Wien Library Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.

"The university is a strong symbol of the community's vitality and the statement made by its presence says a lot about the city," said UAF Chancellor Marshall Lind. "Our programs are growing to the point where we're running out of places to put them." While it's exactly the kind of problem we like to have, we need to take this opportunity to plan for that growth."

UAF's current master plan was developed in 1991. Since then, the Natural Science Facility, the International Arctic Research Center, MacLean Inupiat House and the Student Recreation Center have been built. In 2002, UAF will break ground for construction of the $31 million UA Museum expansion and UAF's FY03 capital budget request includes funding for a science and research facility on the West Ridge of campus.

"We're considering how our students, staff and faculty live and work on our campus," said Carol Adamczak, UAF project manager for design and construction. "We're also looking at ways to enhance the business community's interaction with the university."

The community has been asked to give input into the design concept of the master plan, and help identify areas that need improvement.

University staff, faculty and students will have an opportunity to provide input during an open house on Wednesday, Sept. 26 in the Hess Commons Cyber Café from 5 - 7 p.m.
