MEDIA ADVISORY
TO: News Directors and Education Reporters
SUBJECT: Duckering Opening Delayed/Classes Postponed
LOCATION: Fairbanks Campus
DATE & TIME: Sept. 6 - 7, 2001
Due to construction delays, the Duckering Building will not be available for the first day of classes at UAF on Thursday, Sept. 6, or Friday, Sept. 7, 2001. Fall semester classes will begin in Duckering on Monday, Sept. 10.
The Duckering Building is in the final stages of a $13 million dollar renovation and code correction. When completed the building will house UAFs civil and environmental engineering, mechanical, electrical, petroleum and mining and geological engineering programs.
The Duckering Building will reopen as a modern engineering center, home to all of UAF's engineering instructional and research programs. The co-location of the five departments, the Institute of Northern Engineering, the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory and the Petroleum Development Laboratory, will provide exciting opportunities for collaboration between students and faculty associated with these programs. Modern communication systems, smart classrooms and more than $750,000 in new equipment will provide the necessary infrastructure for 21st century engineering at UAF.
