SUBJECT:            Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration

LOCATION:         Wood Center Multi-level lounge

University of Alaska Fairbanks student Antwaun Carrothers will play Martin Luther King Jr. in a 21st century setting as part of a program celebrating the birthday of the slain civil rights leader. The program, "Celebration 2001: Moving into the Millennium," is sponsored by students, staff and the UAF Office of Multicultural Affairs. It will take place Thursday, Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. in the Wood Center Multi-level lounge.

UAF offices will be closed for regular business Monday, Jan. 15. The University of Alaska Board of Regents approved the holiday and changed the name to Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Celebration of Alaska Civil Rights. University of Alaska Civil Right's Day has been celebrated at UAF since it was originally established by the board of regents in 1994 to honor Martin Luther King Jr., Alaska Native leaders and organizations, and other Alaskans who have led civil rights initiatives benefiting all Alaskans.

This year is the first year it is a paid holiday. The schedule for the Jan. 18 UAF event will be as follows:
