MEDIA ADVISORY

TO:                      News Directors and Education Reporters

FROM:                 University Relations

SUBJECT:            New PIO named at UAF University

Carla Browning has been named public information officer for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Office of University Relations. The hiring committee made their selection just before the holiday closure and Browning began work on Jan. 3, but university relations Director Debra Damron made the official announcement Jan. 9, 2001.

Browning leaves local television station KTVF where she has been in news for seven years—the last three as news director. Browning graduated from UAF in 1993.

"Carla clearly has the broad range of experience necessary to help us with our communication efforts," Damron said. "She understands constraints on local media, is familiar with state and national media and will be a terrific resource for reporters. In addition to her news and university background, she also brings with her a keen understanding of marketing, advertising and public relations."

The Office of University Relations oversees corporate communications for UAF, and is the main campus resource for student recruitment publications, media relations, institutional web site, advertising, publicity and promotional items.

"I'm thrilled to be back on campus again," Browning said. "It's truly an honor to be able to share all of the exciting things happening here with the rest of the world."
