STUDENT STOCK TRADERS MEET IN SEATTLE

Fairbanks, Alaska – Most people don't think of Fairbanks, Alaska as a resource for finance experts, however a group of University of Alaska Fairbanks students, alumni and faculty are giving Wall Street reason to take notice. The group of Alaskans will be making presentations at the Financial Management Association annual meeting at the Washington State Trade Center in Seattle Oct. 26 – Oct. 28.

Alaskan students attending the conference are members of the UAF Student Investment Fund (SIF). One of only about 60 in the nation, SIF participates in hands-on management of a half-million dollar stock portfolio that has experienced annual returns as high as 107 percent. SIF has been featured on CNN's In The Money and in the Oct. 11, 1999 edition of Fortune Magazine. UAF Business Administration Department Head Mary Lindahl is SIF's faculty adviser. The UAF students are scheduled to make a presentation to the Association of Student Managed Investment Portfolios Thursday afternoon, Oct. 26. They are also scheduled to present and participate in a morning session of the Financial Management Association Oct. 28.

An Alaskan "power lunch" will take place Friday, Oct. 27, when 1994 UAF graduate Sam Enoka, currently with FiberCycle, will join three other UAF alumni now working for Kennedy and Associates, after successful internships with the Alaska Permanent Fund. Joining the alumni will be five current UAF students and Lindahl.

"This is a great opportunity to celebrate the success of UAF alumni and to show how alumni are helping current students by creating networking opportunities for them," Lindahl said.
