HONORS STUDENTS NAMED AT UAF

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 17, 2000

Fairbanks, Alaska - The Rural Alaska Honors Institute, the college preparatory program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is accepting applications from rural Alaska high school students to attend the popular six-week academic summer campus residency program held May 27-July 7.

Current high school juniors or seniors with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average are eligible to apply. The application deadline is March 31. Although RAHI targets rural Alaska Native students, others may also apply.

Last fall, RAHI applications were mailed statewide to rural school counselors and school district offices, Alaska Native village corporations, regional Native profit and non-profit corporations, plus numerous individuals. More than 750 students have completed RAHI since it was organized in 1983 at the request of the Alaska Federation of Natives to improve the opportunities for college success.

"RAHI accomplishes this by integrating students into the campus environment and improving their academic skills," according to program director Jim Kowalsky.

Since RAHI adopted full credit university programs in 1994, more than 280 participants have earned 2,274 college credit hours from UAF.

For questions or applications, call RAHI toll free in Alaska at (800) 478-6886 or via email: fyrahi @uaf.edu. The program's web site is at http://www.uaf.edu/rahi
