Robert Casey, a sophomore majoring in civil engineering, looks on as Aaron Miller inspects a weld during construction of a steel bridge being entered in a national competition. Miller is a journeyman welder who's worked for years in Alaska's oil industry on the North Slope and has returned to school at UAF to earn a degree in geological engineering. He's part of the volunteer team of students who design and construct a steel bridge that is judged on a number of factors including strength, speed of assembly and aesthetics.
