COLLINS NAMED SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 28, 1999
Fairbanks, Alaska - Associate professor James Collins isn't surprised when students at the University of Alaska Fairbanks ask him to "show us the money." After all, he's been teaching students how to run businesses and structure funds for eight years. This year, Collins will be managing more than money, however. Provost Paul Reichardt appointed Collins as the director of the School of Management effective today, based on Collins' business administration acumen, teaching abilities and performance as SOM interim director.
Collins, who served as Business Administration Department Head before taking over the interim director position last year, has taught courses in corporate strategy, administrative policy and other areas of business administration at UAF since 1991. He replaces Keith Criddle, who resigned to take another position in the Lower 48.
Collins came to UAF after completing his doctorate degree in strategy and policy at the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Business, where he was also awarded a master's degree in business administration. While at UAF, Collins has written studies and conducted surveys in a variety of areas, from sex role portrayals in Turkish television advertisements to strategic risk and firm diversity. He has also played an active role in the Fairbanks community, providing consulting services for the Fairbanks Police Department, the Fairbanks Resource Agency and numerous small businesses.
The UAF SOM offers undergraduate programs in economics, accounting and business administration, as well as master's degrees in business administration and resource economics. UAF ranks in an elite group of only 115 schools in the country to have all of their business education and accounting programs accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.
