DONATED ALARM PANEL AIDS FIREFIGHTING TRAINING

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 28, 1998

Fairbanks, Alaska - The Fire Science Program of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Tanana Valley Campus has received a fire detection demonstration system for use in student training. The Simplex model 4005 system was recently donated by Simplex through its Alaska dealer, Comtec Sound & Detection Inc. (CSDI) of Anchorage.

"This donation from Simplex and Comtec fills a gap we've had in our training equipment inventory," according to associate professor Michael McGowan, program coordinator for the UAF Fire Science Program at the Tanana Valley Campus. "We will put this Simplex demo fire detection system to good use in our classes. It will really benefit our fire science students."

"We are pleased our donation will help better train tomorrow's Alaska firefighting professionals", said Marty Wykes of Simplex who, along with Tom Shackle of CSDI, arranged the donation. "The UAF fire science students will learn how fire detection systems can greatly assist firefighters with pinpointing the location of fire or smoke within a building. Finding the source of combustion quickly means saving lives and reducing property damage."

The UAF Fire Department, one of only a few in the country where student firefighters work alongside professionals, will be one of the agencies able to enhance its training opportunities with the new fire alarm panel. UAF's fire science program offers associate degrees in municipal fire, wildland fire and hazardous materials. Currently, there are about 100 students majoring in fire science at UAF where they get classroom education, hands-on training and vocational experience through at least 10 different fire and rescue organizations located throughout the Interior of Alaska

According to Wykes, Simplex is an innovative designer and manufacturer of state-of-the-art systems for fire detection, security access control, building intercom, master time clocks, and workforce time management systems. Founded and located in Gardner, Mass., for 104 years, Simplex has sales and service offices in 160 locations within the United States and Canada, according to Wykes, and employs over 5,000 people worldwide.
