UA PRESS RELEASES NEW TITLES FOR EVERY TASTE

Fairbanks , Alaska - The University of Alaska Press announces the release of three new titles this spring.

"Two Years in the Klondike and Alaskan Gold-Fields 1896-1898," by William B. Haskell, the fifth volume in the Press' Classic Reprint Series, appears in commemoration of the gold rush centennial. Though it has been out of print for nearly a hundred years, Haskell's autobiography has been a major source for every thorough history of the gold rush era. As Harry Sidars of the Alaska Yukon Pioneers said, "I was unable to lay it aside…I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the slightest interest in the Gold Rush. I felt that I was talking to a modern day prospector. His way of saying what he means is just as though he is in the chair next to you."

Also available now is "A Special Gift. The Kutchin Beadwork Tradition," by Kate Duncan and Eunice Carney. This new edition, with an expanded section of color plates and an updated introduction, traverses the history of Kutchin beadwork. It begins with the early regional differences, discussing work that exists now only in memory, and explores traditions both old and new. This volume, with color plates and illustrations, brings back into print the record of Athabaskan craftmanship and credits the individuals who have helped preserve and disseminate it.

"Polar Journeys. The Role of Food and Nutrition in Early Exploration," by Robert E. Feeney, relates the history of polar exploration to the history of the science of nutrition, showing, for example, how advances in food preservation helped make possible human survival on expeditions to the earth's cold-climate extremes.

With extensive quotes from explorers' journals, historical menus, tables, and numerous illustrations, the author presents a vivid description of what the expeditions experienced, making a powerful case that the explorers not only traveled metaphorically on their stomachs, they lived and died by the quantity of their food and especially the quality of their nutrition.
