VALDEZ TO HOST ARCTIC SCIENCE CONFERENCE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 5, 1997

Fairbanks, Alaska - The city of Valdez is the site of the 48th annual meeting of the arctic division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Sept. 24-27.

The conference at the Valdez Civic Center will provide scientists from Alaska, Canada and elsewhere a forum to discuss and present the results of studies ranging from the effects of global warming and arctic contamination to resource exploration, extraction and transportation.

University of Alaska Fairbanks Professor of Marine Science Ted Cooney, current president of the AAAS Arctic Division, is the conference chair. The theme of this year's meeting is "Arctic Science and Resource Management: Exploring the Issues." The keynote speaker is former Alaska Gov. Steve Cowper, currently the executive director of the Northern Forum, an organization of regional governments representing ten northern nations. The public is invited to participate in both the special and technical sessions of the conference as the role of basic and applied science in decision making processes is examined.

A series of plenary sessions will review selected case histories and subjects that define some of the Arctic's most important developmental issues. Subjects to be discussed include overcoming challenges associated with the extraction and transport of Arctic oil and other minerals, recovery from catastrophic environmental accidents, and identifying and responding to atmospheric and water-borne contaminants.

The conference will open with a reception hosted by the Regional Citizen's Advisory Council and the Valdez Museum from 5 - 7 p.m, Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the museum. The public is invited.

Information about topics to be presented can be obtained from conference coordinator Linda Barker, Institute of Marine Science, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, Alaska 99775-7220; phone (907) 474-7531; e-mail: barker@murre.ims.alaska.edu
