UAF FRESHMAN RECEIVES $20,000 NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 22, 1997

Fairbanks, Alaska - Dina Boles, a graduate of Skyview High School in Soldotna, Alaska, will receive $20,000 to attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks this fall under a program targeting students who are pursuing a degree in science or technology. Boles is one of over 240 incoming freshmen college students nationwide to receive the Wal-Mart Competitive Edge scholarship, which is paid out to the student over a four period.

Boles earned a 3.9 grade point average while attending high school and was involved with several social and academic activities, including the Quest program for gifted and talented students and the Kids Voting program. During her freshman year in high school she received the Faculty Award for the Outstanding Art Student at the 1994 UAF Summer Fine Arts Camp.

When she wasn't busy organizing music for her junior class prom or raising money for the American Heart Association, Boles enrolled in college-level courses in calculus and Japanese.

"I've learned that I have a need to be challenged," Boles wrote in her scholarship application. "If the class is a little more challenging I am more involved and learn much more."

Boles will continue challenging herself in the mathematics and science fields when she studies mechanical engineering at UAF this fall.

"Engineering has been my career goal, and my personal goal, since seventh grade," Boles said. "I definitely enjoy learning the complexities of higher math and how it applies to some of the whys of the world."

The award was created by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to support training in technology-intensive industries affecting America's success in the global marketplace. UAF was one of 145 colleges and universities selected to participate, based on technology-related programs.
