MEDIA ADVISORY

TO: News and Features Editors, PSA Directors

FROM: UAF University Relations

SUBJECT: UAF OPEN HOUSE AND PICNIC

DATE: Wednesday, June 11; noon to 7 p.m.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is celebrating 80 years of serving the state throughout 1997, and next week will host a community picnic. High school graduates and their families are invited to the June 11 event, which will feature a host of activities from noon to 7 p.m., including on-site registration for fall classes.

Campus parking will be free. Shuttle buses will also run from outlying parking lots to Signers' Hall, site of a community picnic from 12 to 1:30 p.m.

Students who are considering a college career will be able to get a close-up view of campus, from tours of classrooms and laboratories to ROTC rappelling demonstrations and a free evening swim at the Patty Center pool. Information booths will be set up in Wood Center, a live radio remote with local radio station KWLF will feature interviews with prominent UAF graduates, and UAF's Bookstore will be holding a sidewalk sale as well as a booksigning.

UAF is Alaska's first and oldest institution of higher learning. Known internationally for its high latitude social and scientific studies, UAF is the only university in Alaska offering classes at the Ph.D. level.
