Bartlett Lecture Series

DATE, TIME: Friday, April 4 at 7 p.m.

LOCATION: Schaible Auditorium, Bunnell Building, UAF Campus

Political analyst and author Michael Parenti will be speaking Friday, April 4 at 7 p.m. in the Schaible Auditorium, UAF Bunnell Building. His free, public lecture "Dirty Truths: The Politics of News Media" will take a look at how print and broadcast news affect political activism in the U.S.

Parenti is a 1962 Ph.D. graduate of political science from Yale University. He has taught and lectured at numerous college campuses in the U.S. and overseas. He is the author of nine books focusing on such topics as U.S. imperialism, economic power and what he calls "the invented reality of the news and entertainment media." Parenti says Americans must maintain a critical perspective on the media in order to make informed choices and participate effectively in government.

The Bartlett Lecture Program is named for Alaska Sen. Bob Bartlett, who attended Fairbanks public schools and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Bartlett is considered a major architect of Alaska's statehood. He died in 1968. The Bob Bartlett Memorial Fund, established in 1970 to promote understanding of individual freedom, pays for the lecture series.
