American Indian and Alaska Native scientists and engineers from throughout the Pacific Northwest will meet in Fairbanks March 6-8. The UAF chapter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society is hosting the 1997 regional AISES conference, the first ever to be held in Alaska. Keynote speakers are Donna Galbreath, an Athabaskan physician from Chief Andrew Isaac Regional Hospital in Fairbanks, and Richard Glenn, an Inupiaq sea-ice expert from Barrow. Both will speak about building strong communities through science, technology and Native values, the theme of this year's conference.

Work sessions will be conducted throughout the three-day event. Experts in arctic engineering will head up a panel discussion on March 7. A slide show on Northwest Alaska subsistence and wildlife by photographer Ross Schaeffer, director of Kotzebue's Alaska Technical Center, will follow the panel discussion.

In addition, work sessions geared toward AISES high school chapters are scheduled throughout the conference, as well as a career fair open to the public on March 6.
