EVENT: Alaska Civil Rights Day

DATE, TIME: Monday, Jan. 20, 1997, 1 - 2:30 p.m.

LOCATION: Wood Center Ballroom

UAF will celebrate Alaska Civil Rights Day on Monday, Jan. 20, to honor Martin Luther King Jr., Alaska Native leaders and others who have led civil rights initiatives benefiting all Alaskans. University offices will be open for business but classes for students will not be held. The first day of classes for the spring semester at UAF is Thursday, Jan. 16.

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend a presentation at the Wood Center Ballroom Monday, Jan. 20, from 1 - 2:30 p.m. sponsored by the Black Awareness Student Union, UAF Diversity Education Team, UAF student activities office and the UAF Equal Opportunity Office.

Fairbanks City Mayor Jim Hayes will be the keynote speaker for the event that will also include UAF Chancellor Joan Wadlow, Alaska Native student Jaylene Wheeler, multicultural dances and dramatic performances.

Alaska Civil Rights Day kicks off a week of poetry readings, video presentations and Native dancing Tuesday through Friday, at the Wood Center Multilevel Lounge focusing on civil rights. Saturday ends the week-long celebration with the movie "Cry the Beloved Country" at 8 p.m., Schaible Auditorium. Alaska Civil Rights Week is the first in a series of activities scheduled throughout the spring semester by UAF's Diversity Education Team.
