SUBJECT: "Research for a Diverse Society"

DATE/TIME: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30 p.m.

June 25 - July 30, 1996

A public lecture series focusing on educational issues called "Research for a Diverse Society" will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays June 25 through July 30 at 4:30 p.m. in the Natural Sciences Facility on the UAF campus.

Available for credit through the Alaska Summer Education Research Institute (ASERI), lectures are free and open to the public, and include "Writing the Wrongs of Fieldwork" and "The Respectful Exchange of Indigenous Healing Wisdom." This is the institute's second summer of providing a forum for national and local scholars to meet and discuss educational research, inquiry and reform. Students attending the series for credit must pay a registration fee and participate in class discussions.

Invited guests and presenters include psychology professor Richard Katz from Saskatchewan Indian Federated College, Illisagvik College President Edna Ahgeak MacLean, Indian and northern education professor Verna St. Denis from Stanford University, and UAF education professor Oscar Kawagley, who last fall taught the video course "Native Ways of Knowing" to students statewide.

All lectures take place in room 201 of the Natural Sciences Facility, except for the July 23 and July 25 presentations, which take place in room 202.

Here's the lecture schedule for the week of June 24:
