SUBJECT: Executive and Legislative Proclamations

Recognize Outstanding UAF Programs

DATE: May 10, 1996

Both the legislative and executive branches of state government have issued proclamations to recognize outstanding programs at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Gov. Tony Knowles has proclaimed May 5 - 11 as "Rural Human Services Week" in Alaska in recognition of UAF's Rural Human Service System Project.

Designed several years ago to provide quality educational opportunities for human services providers, the program was approved in April 1993 by the University of Alaska Board of Regents and is jointly sponsored by UAF, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services and regional Native health corporations. The program provides a combination of western and traditional methods of rural human services delivery.

The 30-credit certificate program, developed by a committee of Alaska Natives working with UAF, trains students to provide mental health and substance abuse counseling and prevention services within the context of Native culture and tradition.

On the legislative side of the Capitol, the Nineteenth Alaska Legislature issued a citation to honor UAF's role in helping the United Way of the Tanana Valley raise $1.2 million during its 1995 - 1996 campaign. UAF is listed in the citation at the top of the list of employee group contributors, followed by the State of Alaska, Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, Seekins Ford Lincoln Mercury and the Fairbanks North Star Borough.
