Paul Reichardt will continue as dean - this time as dean of the restructured college called for by the University of Alaska Board of Regents-directed program assessment, as changes continue to be implemented at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The proposed name for the new organization is the College of Sciences, Engineering and Mathematics, which will be submitted to the regents for the June meeting.
The new college combines the College of Natural Sciences; the School of Engineering; and the Department of Mathematical Sciences, formerly in the College of Liberal Arts. Program assessment called for the merger of several UAF schools and colleges to streamline the administration and better integrate the delivery of UAF programs.
Chancellor Joan Wadlow said this is one of the most important actions UAF has accomplished this year. "This reorganization is a major achievement as we respond to the board in carrying out its program assessment mandate. Importantly, it also strengthens UAF. Other organizational changes are in progress," Wadlow said. A faculty committee chaired by Tom Clausen recommended the appointment of Reichardt. The committee made its recommendation to Provost John P. Keating, who made the announcement of Reichardt's appointment today, May 8, 1996.
"Paul Reichardt has proven to be a scholar and administrator extraordinaire. His contributions to UAF have been consistent, and his ability to step into new administrative roles with the least amount of disruption is exemplary. I have no doubt that under Paul's leadership the new college will flourish and highlight the best of each of the units merged," Keating said.
Reichardt has served as the dean of the College of Natural Sciences since 1991 after serving as interim dean for one year. He also served UAF as interim provost in 1993. He joined the faculty in 1972 as assistant professor of chemistry.
Reichardt has spearheaded several critical task forces during his tenure at UAF. Most recently he chaired the chancellor's task force that reviewed proposals for cost-saving strategies at UAF. He also provided the leadership for the 15-year plus effort to secure funding for the Natural Sciences Facility.
