Fairbanks, Alaska ó The Rural Alaska Honors Institute (RAHI) is looking statewide for student applicants to its summer program May 25 - July 5, 1996 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). The student application deadline is March 31, 1996.
Forty to 45 juniors and seniors presently attending rural high schools will be chosen from the applicants, based upon their academic achievement and a strong commitment to earn a college degree. RAHI is aimed primarily at rural Alaska Native Students, however, others may also apply.
The six-week college preparatory campus residency program is sponsored by UAF and is in its 14th year. RAHI features an intensive college freshman writing course along with study skills, orientation to the college system, swimming, Native dance, and several major electives ó Business Administration, Biology, Petroleum Engineering, and Alaska Native Studies.
Qualified students may also choose courses offered by UAF Summer Sessions. All courses are taken for full college credit except swimming. Students can be expected to earn anywhere from six to nine college credits next summer at RAHI, and all credits will count toward the requirements for a college degree. Some school districts also accept credits earned at RAHI.

According to RAHI Program Director Jim Kowalsky, personal growth,
a chance to explore career choices, development of support networks with other
students, a celebration of the Native cultures of Alaska, learning how to live and be productive in a university setting, and how to integrate into that environment are all part of the RAHI experience, designed to help students improve their chances for college success.
"This is just a really fantastic way to get a real head start in college, both through the earning of college credits and through the personal and academic growth that comes with being here," Kowalsky said.
Those applicants who are selected will receive a RAHI scholarship which covers all the costs associated with attending the program including travel.
Application packets have been mailed to all rural schools, to Native corporations and to interested individuals.
