Upward Bound Director Receives RecognitionAndy Angiak, director of UAFís Upward Bound Classic Program, received the Northwest Association of Special Programsí Pearl Hill Award for 1994-95. The state headquarters for Alaskaís Upward Bound Classic Program is at UAF. Upward Bound is a college bridging program for junior and senior high school students. The year-round program is offered in most Alaska school districts and helps students prepare for college.

UAF Fund-Raising Professional Recognized Pamela Davis, director of development at UAF, was honored as this yearís Outstanding Professional in Philanthropy by the Alaska chapter of the National Fund-Raising Executives. Last year Davis led northernMOMENTUM, the largest, single fund-raising campaign in Alaska's history. Finishing on schedule and under budget, UAF raised almost $13 million, exceeding its $10 million goal.

UAF Employee Becomes Certified Safety Professional Marie Scholle, safety/training officer in UAFís risk management department, recently completed all requirements for certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP). This highly respected certification is awarded to individuals who meet academic and professional safety experience requirements and pass two, seven-hour examinations. CSPís specialize in protecting workers, the public, property, and the environment by identifying, evaluating and controlling hazards and managing programs aimed at compliance with safety principles and federal, state and local laws and regulations..

Tanana Valley Campus Director Receives Governor Appointment Ruth Lister, director of UAFís Tanana Valley Campus, was appointed by Gov. Tony Knowles to the Alaska Human Resource Investment Council. The council promotes an efficient, effective and integrated system of employment education and training programs. The council also supports services for Alaskans to help them gain the skills and opportunities necessary to earn a living wage and to meet the stateís future business needs.

Native Alaskan History Made into Documentary The film ìMore Than Words,î about Marie Smith Jones, the last speaker of the Eyak language, and the Eyak Indiansí struggle for recognition and protection of their lands, premiered at the Center for the Performing Arts in Anchorage. UAF linguist Michael Krauss of the Alaska Native Language Center (ANLC), was present at the showing. Krauss played a significant role in the making of the movie.
