ALYESKA GIVES SUPPORT TO THREE UAF PROGRAMS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 16, 1995

Fairbanks, Alaska Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. has given $108,850 to the University of Alaska Fairbanks to support education and outreach programs for Alaska Native students statewide.

UAF’s rural development program, the UAF Rural Alaska Honors Institute (RAHI) and UAF’s Tanana Valley Campus (TVC) will each receive about $35,000. The funds will be used to support scholarships for Alaska Native students.

1 The rural development department at UAF, which offers programs focusing on community-based research and cultural arts documentation, local government administration, land and renewable resources, small business management as well as community service and organization, will provide scholarships for two Alaska Native students.

2 The rural development program offers classes at the Fairbanks campus, UAF’s five branch campuses and throughout the state with its field-based program for students in rural communities.

3 The field-based program, which combines at-home study with attendance at special seminars, currently enrolls 19 students from communities as far away as Unalaska and Chevak.

4 RAHI, the summer academic program for college-bound, primarily Alaska Native rural high school students, will use the Alyeska donation to support a new academic focus in petroleum engineering. Funds will also provide additional support for the already-existing business management program.

5 Full RAHI scholarships will be offered to students choosing either of these program areas. According to RAHI Director Jim Kowalsky, Alyeska hopes to increase its recruitment of Alaska Natives into its workforce by supporting UAF’s college bridging program.

8 Information and student applications for RAHI is being sent to all rural schools. For more information contact Kowalsky or Denise Wartes at (907) 474-6886 or 1-800-478-6886.

Alaska Native students are also eligible to apply for an Alyeska scholarship at the Tanana Valley Campus. Sholarships will be awarded based on student need and are available for the 1996 spring, summer or fall semester. Recipients can use their scholarship for tuition, books and/or living expenses while enrolled full-time in one of TVC’s technical or vocational programs.
