UAF STUDENT WINS $20,000 WAL-MART COMPETITIVE EDGE SCHOLARSHIP
Fairbanks, Alaska Tristan D. Kenny, a freshman majoring in engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is the recipient of the 1995 Wal-Mart Competitive Edge Scholarship. Kenny will be awarded $20,000 to be distributed over four years.
Kenny graduated from Palmer High School last spring. He participated in numerous civic, academic, social and athletic activities while in high school, graduating with a 4.00 grade point average. He was active in Russian studies and was a member of the Russian Honor Society and Palmer Highs Russian Hall of Fame. Kenny has also received five national awards as well as excelling in wrestling and football. He helped organize a work crew for the Governors Student Health Conferences, and the Toybox Drive for the Womens Resource Center.
Working to complete his engineering undergraduate degree, Kenny plans to become a consulting engineer for Russian companies. According to Kenny, he wishes to use his talents to be a part of the many opportunities developing in Russia. He believes that to be truly successful, he must generate new ideas to help others overcome challenges.
The award was designed by the Wal-Mart Stores as a commitment to the growth and strength of technology-intensive industries affecting Americas success in the global marketplace. UAF was one of 135 colleges and universities selected to participate, based on technology-related programs.
