LEWIS NAMED DEAN OF UAF’S SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE AND LAND RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Fairbanks, Alaska – University of Alaska Fairbanks Chancellor Marshall Lind announced today that Carol E. Lewis has been appointed as the dean of the School of Agriculture and Land Resources Management and Director of the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. Lewis has been serving as interim dean since July 2000.

“Lewis has shown leadership in this position and will continue to move the school forward,” said Chancellor Lind. “She’s interested in working with communities to implement sustainable, resource-based economic development, a component of UAF’s strategic plan.”

Lewis has been a professor at UAF since 1973 and served as department head from 1989 to 1998. Prior to coming to UAF, Lewis was an assistant professor of mathematics at Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia from 1966 to 1967 and a research physicist at the Naval Weapons Laboratory in Virginia from 1969 to 1972.

At UAF, Lewis has served as president of College Rotary and as a two-term president of the UAF chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, a national academic honor society. She is currently a member of the Center for Legislative Energy and Environmental Research, an advisory board to the U.S. Energy Council, and recently was appointed to the Board of International Food and Agricultural Development, which advises and assists the development of the official U.S. foreign assistance program in agriculture.

The School of Agriculture and Land Resources Management prepares students for careers in natural resources management and geography, with emphases on forestry, agriculture, resources and environmental studies. The Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station provides applied and basic research information and outreach specific to sustainable management of natural resources by associated industry, management agencies and the general public.
