CAMPUS ADVISORY
TO: UAF staff, faculty and students
FROM: University Relations
SUBJECT: Sexual Assault Investigation Update
LOCATION: UAF Fairbanks Campus
DATE & TIME: Friday, April 5, 2002
The University Police Department's investigation of an alleged kidnapping
and sexual assault of a female UAF student has determined that the incident
did not occur as reported. Due to the inconsistent statements that have
been made by the alleged victim, UAF police investigators cannot determine
that the incident occurred. The student originally reported that on Thursday,
March 28 at 9:47 p.m. she was outside the Wood Center Building when she
was pulled by an assailant from the north to the west side of the building
and assaulted. Police say the student has admitted that portions of her
written and oral statements are inaccurate. The case remains under review
as investigators continue to explore the exact nature and extent of the
incident asreported.
The health, safety and security of all those who live, work and study
at UAF remain a high priority. Students, faculty and staff are reminded
to exercise safety precautions at all times: walk in pairs at night or
call 474-7721 for police security escorts, be aware of your surroundings,
keep residence halls and rooms locked, alert campus police if you will
be working late or on weekends, report all incidents of crime or suspected
crime to UAF's Police Department, and never hesitate to call for help.
Enhanced, emergency 911 phones marked with BLUE LIGHTS are available
on campus in 21 locations. By dialing 911, the phones ring directly into
the UAF police dispatch center. The location of the caller is automatically
registered.
