UAF
RAHI PROGRAM RECRUITING STUDENTS
FOR THE 20TH YEAR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 18, 2001
Fairbanks, Alaska High school juniors and seniors looking for
a challenging college head start should consider the summer Rural Alaska
Honors Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Known as RAHI,
the six-week institute prepares students for the many challenges of college
life by sharpening academic skills and helping develop the means to cope
successfully with college life. Students live on the UAF campus in a residence
hall and register for eight or nine university credits.
"The credits earned count toward degree requirements down the road,"
says program director Jim Kowalsky. "But its the overall experience
that really counts. Students who participate in RAHI tend to be successful
college students."
Kowalsky says the program helps to build a life-long community of scholars
and a constituency for learning by meeting the social and academic challenges
of the program during the summer. The curriculum tentatively includes
writing, study skills, pre-calculus, chemistry, psychology, computer science,
Native dance and swimming. Students will be on campus May 25 July
6, 2002.
Travel, tuition, room and board, books and supplies are awarded to those
selected to attend. In the last 20 years, the program has served nearly
900 students. Many former participants are in Alaskas professional
workforce as teachers, engineers, social workers, nurses and tribal administrators,
as well as serving in government and the private sector. Others are pursuing
advanced degrees including law and medicine.
Interested students must be juniors or seniors with at least a 3.0 grade
point average and must apply no later than March 31, 2002. RAHI targets
rural Alaska Native students, but others may also apply. Successful candidates
must demonstrate serious intent to enroll in college to earn an academic
degree. Students may obtain applications from school counselors. They
may also download applications from RAHI online at http://www.uaf.edu/rahi/
or contact RAHI directly at 1-800-478-6886 or by e-mail: fyrahi@uaf.edu.
The deadline for applications is March 31, 2002.
