SUBJECT:            UAF Master Planner to Speak at Chamber Luncheon

Richard Macias, director of campus planning with San Francisco based architectural firm Roberts Wallace Todd, will speak at the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce June 5, 2001 on the importance of a master plan for the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

UAF’s current master plan was developed in 1991. Since then, the construction of the Natural Science Facility, the International Arctic Research Center, MacLean Inupiat House and the Student Recreation Center have changed the look of campus and many buildings have been refurbished as a result of deferred maintenance funding.

"It’s time to look ahead to see what UAF will look like in the future, not just on campus, but around it as well," said Carol Adamczak, UAF project manager for design and construction. "We want input on the planned growth for the campus and from businesses and services on the perimeter to explore areas where the university’s economic contribution can be enhanced."

The community has been asked to give input into the design concept and some even participated in a participatory photo exhibit last April. UAF’s Master Planning Committee provided 30 disposable cameras and asked a cross-section of university and Fairbanks community members to take pictures of what they think are the prime targets for master planning projects.

"We were pleased to see the involvement from students, staff, faculty and alumni after the photos went up in the Wood Center," said UAF Chancellor Marshall Lind. "It’s clear that people care about the Fairbanks campus and their comments provided a unique perspective on how to give the campus a strong sense of place."

Macias is a landscape architect with Wallace Roberts Todd specializing in campus planning. WRT is consulting partners with Bezek Durst Seiser, an Anchorage firm.
