SUBJECT:            Borealis Brass Trio to Perform in Rome

Three faculty members of UAF's music department will travel to Rome next month to perform in a concert series sponsored by the Vatican. The Borealis Brass Trio, comprised of John Harbaugh, trumpet, Jane Aspnes, horn and James Bicigo, trombone, will perform at the Church of St. Mary in Acquiro at Piazza Caprancica on Dec. 29, 2000.

The concert, entitled "And the trumpets sounded…," is part of a series of liturgical meditations throughout the year featuring the music of women composers. The series is officially sponsored by the Vatican as part of the celebration of the proclaimed Holy Year of 2000, and includes music by 300 women spanning 1,200 years and representing 55 nations. Pope John Paul II expressed his wish that the series "may be of help to all those who listen, to raise their hearts and spirits through the sacred music."

"This recognition really speaks to the overall quality of the music program here at UAF," said John Leipzig, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts. "It's another example in a long list of accomplishments by our music faculty."

The trio will perform a preview of their Rome concert at the Charles W. Davis Concert Hall on Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the music department office or at the door.
