SUBJECT Student Stock Traders Rack Up Record Dividends
DATE&TIME Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 1:30 p.m.
LOCATION Schaible Auditorium, Bunnell Building, UAF Campus
After sharing their successful stock portfolio strategies with editors of Fortune magazine in October, and with executives at McKinley Capital in Anchorage - one of the Permanent Fund's many money managers- last week, University of Alaska Fairbanks student traders are gearing up for what might be their most important presentation of the year.
On Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 1:30 p.m., in front of UA President Mark Hamilton and UAF Chancellor Marshall Lind, members of the Student Investment Fund will give their year-end report under the watchful guidance of their business professor Mary Lindahl. Students will share their stock secrets, including what investments are in the current SIF portfolio and how the SIF managers make buy and sell decisions.
These Nanook traders are coming to the end of yet another phenomenal year of managing the UAF student stock portfolio. From an initial investment of $100,000 in 1991, the fund has grown to over a half-million dollars. But last year's record 67 percent return rate on investments wasn't just a stroke of luck.
At the closing bell on Wednesday, Dec. 8, the SIF was valued at $530,000, which is a year-to-date return of 71 percent. These students not only know how to take a bull market by the horns, their most recent investments from profits are decidedly bearish-polar bearish to be exact. The SIF managers have voted to double the amount of "dividends" available in the form of scholarships from $4,000 in 1999 to $8,000 for UAF students enrolled in 2000.
