Manuscript Submissions

Review Process

Manuscript Submissions:

The University of Alaska Press encourages the submission of scholarly manuscripts on topics relating to Alaska and the circumpolar north. Please do not submit complete manuscripts or original materials unless requested to do so.

If you would like our editorial staff to consider your work, please submit a complete book proposal or prospectus that contains the following:

* A brief overview of the book's topic, approach, and style.

* A technical description of the manuscript, including length, approximate number and type of illustrations, etc. Estimate length based on double-spaced, 12 pt text.

* A complete table of contents that includes a brief overview of each chapter.

* A description of the intended audience and market for the book, including a comparison of other titles in print on related subjects and a discussion of the unique contribution of your manuscript.

* Your curriculum vitae or credentials and a list of other published work.

* Your e-mail address.

Always make copies of materials before you send them and never send your only copy of the text, photos, or illustrations. Address materials to:

Editorial Department
University of Alaska Press
P.O. Box 756240
Fairbanks, AK 99775-6240

If the editorial staff requests that you submit a complete manuscript, please send us one unbound copy, printed double-spaced on one side only with consecutive pagination throughout. Use at least a 12-point font size. Please include xeroxes or printed copies of illustrations. Do not send materials electronically unless you have made prior arrangements to do so with your editorial contact.

Review Process

An initial, in-house review of manuscript submissions determines their quality and compatibility with the mission of the University of Alaska Press. Successful submissions are subjected to a confidential peer-review process, which takes an average of six months. Authors may suggest peer reviewers, but must fully disclose their personal and professional relationships to those individuals. All referees are asked to assess the quality of writing, accuracy, completeness of research, and contribution to the discipline. The referees' reports, in addition to the recommendation of the UA Press editorial staff, will be forwarded to the editorial board for consideration.
