HOSTS
13th Inuit Studies Conference
Voices from Indigenous Communities:
Research, Reality & Reconciliation

The University of Alaska Fairbanks
Department of Alaska Native and Rural Development

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Alaska Native and Rural Development (DANRD) is taking the lead in organizing the 13th Inuit Studies Conference in August 2002. The spark that lit the flame to host this conference was lit when DANRD Director Gordon Pullar took eight students to Aberdeen, Scotland to attend and present at the 12th Inuit Studies Conference, as part of a travel study class in the newly developed Rural Development Masters Program. Information on the 12th Inuit Studies Conference held in Aberdeen, Scotland is still on the web for those interested.

DANRD faculty and students attended the 12th Inuit Studies Conference at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland in 2000, and they wanted to host the 13th Inuit Studies Conference in 2002.

A planning committee involving faculty, staff, and students, as well as some key people outside the DANRD program started meeting in May 2001. Gordon Pullar, DANRD's director, is designing a special topics class around the planning effort so RD students can earn credit for working on this project. Those interested in giving presentations are encouraged to submit proposals to Mary Ann Katt by March 31, 2002.
