Jon Dehn is an Associate Research Professor with the Alaska Volcano Observatory at the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He holds a BS (1984) and MS (1987) in Geology from Arizona State University, and is a three time Fulbright scholar to Germany. He received his doctoral degree in natural sciences in Geology, with minors in Geophysics and Computer Science from the University of Kiel, Germany in 1992. Since that time he has worked in the Siberian Arctic with the Liebniz-Insititute for Marine Science and on Hokkaido's volcanoes with the Geological Survey of Japan in Sapporo. He came to UAF in 1997 monitoring Alaska's volcanoes through satellite remote sensing developing new tools to improve prediction and hazard mitigation. Though a research faculty member, he has taught every year at UAF in addition to a strong commitment to outreach efforts at all levels. He also holds affiliate positions at the University of Hawaii at Manoa as well as at the Open University in Milton Keynes, UK, and is active in research on volcanoes Kamchatka and Italy. Jon was elected to the Faculty senate in 2006, serving on the Faculty Affairs Committee, which he chaired from 2007-2008. He was chosen as President-Elect in 2008. His focus in the Senate has been to include all faculty equally in self-governance, bringing a voice to research faculty at UAF.

Cathy Cahill

President-Elect - Cathy Cahill

Office:
Chemistry and Biochemistry 182 Reichardt Building University of Alaska Fairbanks Fairbanks, AK 99775

Cathy received a B.S. in Applied Physics from the University of California, Davis (1990), an M.S. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington (1994) and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Nevada, Reno and the Desert Research Institute (1996).  After a Fulbright Fellowship to University College, Galway, Ireland, and a stint as a Visiting Assistant Research Professor at the Desert Research Institute, she took up her current position as a faculty member at UAF.  Since coming to UAF ten years ago, she's taught courses ranging from general chemistry and chemistry for non-science majors through physical chemistry to graduate atmospheric sciences and environmental chemistry.  She has graduated both Ph.D. and M.S. students and received a UAF award for outstanding undergraduate advising (2002). Cathy has served on Faculty Senate for more than five years and has chaired both the Graduate Academic & Advisory Committee (May 2005-May 2007) and the Faculty Affairs Committee (2008-2009).  Having chaired these two very different, committees, she is well aware of the diversity of topics handled by the Faculty Senate and the importance of the Standing and Permanent Committees to the success of faculty and academic programs. She believes that UAF is going to need the full diversity of Faculty Senate to ensure a successful accreditation process and to demonstrate our position as the premier, Ph.D.-granting institution in the University of Alaska system.

2008-09 Faculty Senate
President and President-Elect

Marsha Sousa, President-elect for Faculty Senate 07-08

President - Marsha Sousa

Marsha Sousa is an associate professor in the Allied Health Division of Tanana Valley Campus. She received her Ph.D. from Colorado State University in 1982, and remained there as a special assistant professor and director of the endocrine service laboratory until 1989. Marsha has been associated with UAF in one capacity or another since the fall of 1989.  She taught for the Biology Department, and has done research with the colleagues at the Institute of Arctic Biology and the School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences.  Currently Marsha is the Division Chair and Coordinator of Allied Health Programs at TVC.  The diversity of her faculty experiences at UAF gives her a unique perspective, one that allows her to understand various faculty perspectives and build consensus among those who may have different needs and priorities.

Marsha was elected to Faculty Senate in spring of 2006, and was elected chair of the Curricular Affairs Committee in the fall.  Her goal as president-elect is to facilitate the incorporation of the faculty’s needs, goals and ideas into the administration of the University.  She believes that the engagement of a wide group of faculty will lead to higher faculty morale and increased commitment to academic and research excellence.

Jon is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science (2001-pres).

He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Texas A&M University in 1993.  His previous experience includes three years (1993-1996) as a visiting assistant professor at UAF and five years (1996-2001) as a research scientist at the San Diego Supercomputer Center.  Since returning to UAF, Jon has been CS program chair (2002-2004), CS department chair (2005-pres), elected to the Faculty Senate in 2004 and chair of the Faculty Affairs committee during the 2005-06 term.

His primary interest in governance is a desire that UAF provides all students with the best education possible.  As admission standards rise, it becomes very tempting to put those who fail to meet the standards into remedial programs and forget about them.  Jon believes that this is unacceptable at UAF and will work for the necessary resources to allow these students to progress towards their goals.
