Course & Degree Procedures Manual

MEMORANDUM
DATE: June 25, 2008
TO:

Academic Department Heads
Department Administrative Support Staff
College Curriculum Council Chairs

FROM: Jayne Harvie, Coordinator
Governance Office
SUBJECT: 2008-2009 Course and Degree Procedures Manual

This booklet provides updated information necessary for proposing academic changes, especially those needed to be effective in Fall 2009 and Fall 2010.  Please keep it for future reference and duplicate the appropriate sections for others in your area.  Past experience suggests that the booklet is helpful to support staff with a role in preparation of course requests, as well as faculty.

This booklet is also available on the Governance Office web site:
http://www.uaf.edu/uafgov/faculty/cd/

The 2009-2010 UAF Catalog goes to the printer in February 2009 and is distributed in late spring.  It should include academic changes that have completed the approval process in the Spring 2008 and Fall 2008 review cycles.  Academic changes that complete the approval process in the Spring 2009 review cycle will appear in the 2010-2011 catalog.

Highlights of changes in recent academic years include:

  • A New Occupational Endorsement Request (Format 3A) – now approved at the Chancellor level.
  • All New Degree Program Requests (Format 3) require the completion of a Board of Regents' Summary Form and a Resource Commitment Form, to be signed by the program proponents and the respective Dean. A prospectus for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) will need to be completed once the program has been approved. Thus, the submission of a draft prospectus with the Format 3 paperwork is strongly encouraged, and a template is available.
  • The inclusion of a description of the student learning outcomes assessment process for new programs and revisions of major programs changes.

It is also now strongly encouraged that all course request files normally submitted to the Governance Office be submitted electronically.  If course request paperwork normally submitted to the Governance office is emailed to fysenat@uaf.edu, then only one hard copy need be sent along with the one containing original signatures to Governance.  All course requests received electronically will be posted online to facilitate access by the Senate review committees and the submitter.  This should facilitate making any changes requested by the review committees, as well as making the most current copies available to the Registrar’s Office once a course is approved.  Please help our office support the move to a sustainable campus environment.
