Green Bike Program
Bike Program Mission and Overview
The mission of the UAF Green Bike Program is to make UAF more livable through sustainable transportation, student health promotion, recycling, and advocacy. Emissions from transportation contribute over a third of total greenhouse gases and currently come almost completely from non-renewable sources. To shift UAF’s energy usage towards renewable sources, the students want to increase bicycle use on and around campus by developing a library of bicycles that students can check out for the year/semester/afternoon operated through Outdoor Adventures. The students envision the program benefiting the entire campus, but particularly students who recently moved to the area and may not have their own bicycles, and students just starting to consider bike commuting.
UAF Green Bike Program maintains a fleet of bikes that individuals can check out with their Polar Express cards. They will be responsible for the provided lock and bike, and will need to sign a liability waiver. Helmets are required to check out a Green Bike. Students may bring their own or buy one from Outdoor Adventures for $35. Types of bicycles include cruisers, mountain and tandem bikes. Contact Outdoor Adventures if you are interested in renting a bike.
Bike Repair and Maintenance
The student bike shop benefits students, faculty and staff with their own bikes who want to learn maintenance skills. Its hours are dependent on the student workers' class schedules and will change each semester. Clinics and workshops will be offered on a semester-by-semester basis on biking/sustainability topics. Contact Outdoor Adventures for additional information.
