FAQs

How do I submit a proposal?

Proposals should be written with one-inch margins in no smaller than 12-point Times Roman font and should include required elements listed in the proposal guidelines. Proposals should be submitted in a single electronic document in both word and .pdf format. Once the proposals are received, the RISE Board will convene to the review proposals. Please check our posted timeline to see when you can expect to be apprised of the results.

Who can submit proposals?

Student Initiative for Renewable Energy Now (SIREN) fund is the result of fees collected from UAF students on a per course basis. The UAF Chancellor matches whatever amount the fee generates. Thus, only students, faculty and staff from UAF can submit proposals. Other UA campuses are not eligible for UAF monies. All proposals must include students and have a faculty or staff mentor and have a department that will oversee the project. Rural campuses are not eligible, as they do not pay this fee.

What will these proposals cover?

Projects must address the SIREN purpose “investing in energy efficiency programs and renewable energy projects” or one of the issues and visions recommended in the document UAF Campus Sustainability: Recommendations from the Chancellor’s Sustainability Transitions Team, July 2008. Issues include energy, transportation, purchasing, waste management, sustainable design, education and curriculum, food systems, social sustainability, and processes and institutions. Preference will be given to projects or programs which reduce UAF’s non-renewable energy consumption.

What is the SIREN Fee?

The SIREN fee is a $20 per semester additional charge for you to attend classes at UAF, which was referendum question on Spring 2009, ASUAF regular spring election. The fee levied by this initiative began in the spring semester 2010 and will be repealed after the spring semester of 2020.

Who must pay the SIREN fee?

All those enrolled as students at UAF will be subject to this fee on a per semester fee basis.

Where will the SIREN fee monies be spent?

SIREN monies paid by UAF students will remain at UAF to predominately focus on projects that invest in energy efficiency programs and renewable energy projects. Projects may also focus on issues and visions as identified in the documentUAF Campus Sustainability: Recommendations from the Chancellor’s Sustainability Transitions Team, July 2008.

What is "Sustainability?"

The members of the RISE board recognizes the vision for sustainability at UAF proposed by students in NRM 430, Spring 2008: UAF will strive to be a model of environmental stewardship and social justice by incorporating the ideals of sustainability into every facet of campus life. For additional information, please see the issues, visions and recommendations discussed in UAF Campus Sustainability: Recommendations from the Chancellor’s Sustainability Transitions Team, July 2008.
