Investigative Reporters and Editors

Alaska Community Colleges' Federation of Teachers

  • 2004 - Champion of Academic Freedom: Sharice Walker, Tom Delaune, and Brian O'Donoghue

Alaska Press Club

  • 2005 - Best Sustained Coverage (Small Papers) - Honorable Mention: Casey Grove and Alex Grantham, "Dorm Security"

  • 2004 - Best Political or Governmental Reporting (Small Papers) - 2nd Place: Nate Raymond, "Sen. Stevens brings home the bacon for UAF"

Judge: Dan Hortsch, former politics/state government reporter and public editor for The Oregonian, now retired

Judge's Comments: The writer, avoiding a dull list approach, uses a relaxed but still detailed picture of the many financial blessings to fall upon the university through the efforts of U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens. The supporting quotes and examples -- $6.28 million to assess “new uses for wood” -- illustrate how well the school did and writer’s style. He also remembers to add some detail to such examples to help explain the potential for substance behind what might first appear to be a frivolous use of money. Readers can decide the merits on their own.

  • 2003 - Best Crime & Courts Reporting (Small Papers) - 1st Place: Tom Delaune, "Solie's Prior DWI Conviction in Vermont"

Judge: Tom Maurer, The Oregonian, Crime & Justice Team Leader

Judge's Comments: Good investigative effort to find the 1981 DWI on a politician, who has a troubled driving record. It was interesting to see the judge didn't know about it, but her comments at the sentencing suggested that if the politician had a prior DWI, he would be facing more serious time. This was the only true investigative entry in this category.

  • 2003 - Best Arts Coverage (All Papers) - 3rd Place: Robinson Duffy, "Movie Review: ‘The Cat in the Hat"

Judge: Laurie Robinson, Features Copy Desk, The Oregonian

Judge’s Comments: This review, written entirely in Seuss-style verse, managed to be fun, fresh and informative. Robinson Duffy didn’t get so wrapped up in his rhyme that he neglected his job as a reviewer:  He makes several substantial points about the failings of the film. I think Dr. Seuss would have liked the review, and I’m guessing that Seuss fans in Fairbanks ate up every word.

  • 2003 - Best Page Layout & Design (All Papers) - Honorable Mention: Heather Taggard, Jamie Smith, Theresa Roark.

Judge: Steve Dorsey, Design and Graphics Director, Detroit Free Press

Judge's Comments: A college paper with attitude and zest from the lead stories, to the illustration and inside columns, all the way to the folio lines. Bravo. Sadly there are not enough of your peers taking risks like this. Keep up the good work and have (responsible) fun.

  • 2003 - Best Feature Photo (Small Papers) - 2nd Place: Heather Taggard, "Mud Volleyball"

Judge: Rob Romig, Director of graphics and photography, The Register-Guard

Judge's Comments: "Clean...and it's hard to expect that from a mud volleyball game. The photo is quick and easy to read, while showing the subtleties of the mud-sports world (Goggles, collisions and splattering mud)."

  • 2002 - Best Breaking News Story (Small Papers) - 3rd Place: Tom Delaune, "ASUAF Senator-elect May Face Prison Time for Counterfeiting $100 Bills"

  • 2002 - Best Spot News Photo (Small Papers) - 3rd Place: Theresa Roark, "Unexpected Guests"

  • 1996 - Best Columnist (Non-Dailies) - 2nd Place

  • 1996 - Best Scenic Photo (Non-Dailies) - 1st Place: "Lone Student"

Columbia Scholastic Press Association
  • 1983 - 1st Place

  • 1980 - 1st Place
Associated Collegiate Press
  • Spring 1971 - All-American Critical Service
