I lost a friend Saturday night, and buried him this weekend.  I cannot describe my friend, only the impact he had on me...

School of Education receives top praise from accreditation board

The UAF School of Education's ability to prepare educators is said to have met the highest standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.  A 10-member team from the NCATE Board of Examiners came to Alaska for about a week in late September to perform a site visit by conducting interviews, examining a whole room full of documents (the "Evidence Room"), and visiting with rural schools...

Science writer walks his dog across Alaska

Science writer and author Ned Rozell has covered just about every square inch of Alaska with his weekly columns and at least 800 miles of the state when he hiked the length of the pipeline in 1997. He wrote a book about that trip titled "Walking My Dog Jane" that was recently picked up by a second publisher, and this month marks 10 years for Rozell as a science writer at the Geophysical Institute...

Letter from the Editor

Dear Kentrell,

Thank you so much for your letter.  The news of Jacob Steffes' passing is indeed saddening to all of us.  One of the reporters here at the Sun Star is a very close friend of Jake and this week has been especially hard for him.  I did not have the opportunity of ever meeting Jake, but still I cannot help but mourn.  When someone so young—with so much life to live—looses that life, it is nothing short of a tragedy...

Letter to the Editor

I'm writing this as director of "Reliquary," one of the Winter Shorts this fall. Audience turnout has been consistently amazing for the shorts, and I'd like to warmly thank everyone for their support. We couldn't put on the shows if no one came! Also, thank you Sun Star, for printing that color photograph in your Oct 12 issue...

Letter to the Editor

I am writing in reference to your recent article headlined, "Murkowski drops out of debate, cites scheduling conflict." I'm afraid I must correct your headline writer; I did not "drop out" of the debate. As your story noted, I have been committed for months to an event in Juneau on Oct. 20, and despite my best efforts, I can't be in two places at once...

Letter to the Editor

I was very excited to see the full-color cover of the latest (October 12, 2004) Sun Star.  Women's volleyball – and a very engaging shot; excellent!  Then I enjoyed the "Butter" editorial – asking important questions about how money is spent on campus...

DVD Roundup

Food Review

The Pomegranate is a tucked away little bistro--very tucked away. I sought it out with a gang of friends, and had to actually stop and ask a local shop owner in the area where it was. After it was pointed out to us, we found that it was closed on weekends. I came back later that week to see what there was to offer. The restaurant was open--you can watch your plate being prepared right in front of you. The tables are spread out in an intimate yet welcoming arrangement...

UAF Goes Clubbin': NSO: Working to unite students for a better Alaska

In the 1940's, hotels in Alaska bore signs that read, "No Dogs, No Natives."  Since that time, people of all races have been granted Civil Rights...

Rifle team ready despite changed rules

The rifle season started off strong for the Nanooks, but the team already has its eye on this year's championships where new rules could jeopardize a possible seventh title...

Writing on scratch paper before Friday's volleyball game, Coach Phil Shoemaker kept the plan simple: "Play good."
