Poetry and iced lattés coming to Lola Tilly

The Lola Tilly Commons and hip intellectualism may seem like contradictory words, but if university officials can have their way, students may be able to relax to poetry with an iced mocha by as early as next year...

Free flue shots cancelled due to national vaccine shortage

The free flu vaccination clinics held around campus for the last three years have been cancelled this fall due to a nationwide shortage that has the Center for Health and Counseling administering the vaccine only to "high-risk" students, staff, and faculty. High-risk patients include children ages 6 to 23 months; people over 65; anyone with a chronic condition such as diabetes; and anyone who cares for or lives with babies younger than 6 months...

Another Fairbanks First: Stegemeyer spots Sputnik

For twenty years it has been said that the first persons in the Western Hemisphere to see a satellite, Sputnik I, were scientists of the Geophysical Institute at Fairbanks. All these years I have remained silent, but now I reveal the truth—they were not the first.

Editorial: Who ordered the butter monstrosity?

A few weeks ago the Sun Star asked students what they thought the 10 percent tuition increase should be used for.

No one—not a single person—said they wanted their money to be spent on a giant blob of butter carved into the shape of a fish...

Guest Opinion: Just a cartoon?

I am not a subtle person.  I don't often hint at the message.  If anything, subtlety is discovered only after the initial shock of what I am trying to say.  Last week, one such message was cut out of the paper in concern for, well...basic decency, I suppose.  Originally, although somewhat surprised by the omission, I lent way to the precept which states that the Managing Editor is tantamount to gatekeeper for the Sun Star…that's it, conversation over...

Letter to the Editor

I am one of the vendors who do business with UAF.  I drive on campus, do my work and leave.  Recently the Parking Services department announced a vendor parking fee.  I know that students, faculty and staff have paid for parking all along, so what's the big deal?

Letter to the Editor

I would like to congratulate the Sun Star on a most excellent move.  What move?  Putting Haiku Circus on the comics' page.  It's the most entertaining part of the Sun Star and makes me laugh on a weekly basis...

Best brews from your own backyard

The First Annual Breweries of Alaska Beer Tasting and Festival was held last Saturday. To say the least, the festival was a home-run hit for Jeremy Bahr, the UAF Pub Manager...

"Crap That Matters"

Or so claims "The Weekly Pooper," a newsletter assembled by Bartlett RA Brian Hall.  The sheet has been appearing in dormitory stalls throughout upper and lower campus.  Hall, a fifth year senior, has been publishing "Poop" since the beginning of the semester...

"The First Zom-Rom-Com"

Touted as the first zombie-infested romantic comedy, "Shaun of the Dead" mates two intensely tired genres to conceive a surprisingly fun and fresh film - so much so that one wonders why this unholy union wasn't forged long ago.

Nanooks victorious in high-scoring, high-penalty game

The UAF Nanooks scored a 7-4 victory against the (non-conference) Griffins of Grant MacEwan College in their first game of the season. In addition to the eleven goals scored, the game featured an impressive 37 penalties between the two teams...

'Nooks Take Out Seawolves in Slugfest

The UAF Nanooks women's volleyball team fought a vicious tooth-and-nail five-game battle with archenemy UAA Seawolves Saturday, in what UAF head coach Phil Shoemaker could only describe as "a great victory" in front of a raucous, record breaking home crowd of 758.
