Field of chancellor hopefuls narrowed to final four The chancellor search committee released the name of
the fourth and final candidate for UAF chancellor Friday, Apr. 30.
According to the timeline posted on the committee's website, the new
chancellor should be appointed by June. Following is the information the
Sun Star was able to gather about each of the candidates. Students can
get more information and
submit comments to the search committee at www.uaf.edu/chancellor/search.
We don't normally publish the Sun Star during finals
week. Students, including our staff, are usually busy with final exams
and end of the semester projects or heading out of town after wrapping
up the term. But this week there seemed to be too much left up in the
air to not print an extra edition.
New
Elections Board Makes Decision: Gives Election to Walker
The
debacle over who will be ASUAF's president next year hasn't slowed down
in recent weeks, even with a winner being declared by the new elections
board
I'm a student that is not always at the campus and I
am close to never involved with anything on campus. Since people started
running for student body president, there were people telling me to
vote. I have to tell you I really was not going to vote at all, but with
people encouraging me I gave in and votes.
In regards to the recent issues with the ASUAF
elections, I feel that there are certain points that should be made.
Presidential candidate Mr. Brandon Maitlen was accused of "bribery
with food" as well as "undue influence" towards the
student body. Mr. Walker can easily be accused of bribery with food as
well as undue influence. On the day of the elections, Mr. Walker's
banners could be seen from the voting stations. Also, Mr. Walker uses
free drink within his flyers to influence votes. The flyers state that
if Mr. Walker is no longer in office, the free hot chocolate will be
gone.
I would like publicly to commend Brandon Maitlen on
operating such an ethical campaign while running for the ASUAF
presidency this past couple of months. Not once, even to his strongest
supporters, did he proffer negative opinions of the incumbent or
authorize his supports to do so—as may have been the logical thing to
do when the bulk of Mr. Maitlen's campaign signs disappeared from campus
only a few days after being hung.
A
day off of classes close to the end of the spring semester has been a
tradition for about 50 years. The day has officially been called
Governor's Day, All Campus Day or Meltdown in the past. But students
have dubbed it "Case Day" and it is this enduring unofficial
name that has worried campus administration the most. Several groups,
including the UAF police department, worked hard this year to reform the
event, giving it the new name of Nanook SpringFest and providing a
number of alcohol-free activities for students to enjoy. Natives
