Traditions
UAF’s International Education week is featuring African dance and drum duo The Mensah Brothers. Maputo Ayuba and Mawuenyega Mensah will teach African dance on Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and African drumming at the same time on Thursday, in addition to performances on Tuesday and Friday, and will also be the focus of a leadership lunch on Tuesday. Tuesday’s performance is scheduled from noon to 12:30 p.m. in the Wood Center, while Friday’s three times as long, starting at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall. Friday’s performance will cost $5 and all other events are free.
Other multi-cultural events will be taking place throughout the week, including the Margaret Mead Film Festival at 7 p.m on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and all day Saturday, and World Food at the Lola Tilly Commons. Film festival screenings will all take place in the Wood Center Ballroom.
Probation Changes
Motions passed at November’s Faculty Senate meeting will change classes for students on probation, as well as affect prerequisites for all. Students on probation will now be allowed to take 13 credits, rather than 12, allowing them to take a traditional 4 course load including a math or science lab course. The other curricular motion will change the wording of the course catalog so that student’s taking upper level courses are required to receive a C (2.0) grade rather than a C minus (1.7).
The Senate’s Curricular Affairs and Student Academic Development and Achievement committee brought both motions to the table after committee discussions on how to resolve the related issues.
