The Nanooks got off to a great start Saturday in front of a lively crowd there to cheer for the final time at home for Seniors Jessica King and Jenna Jones. The Crusaders came into the match ranked third in the GNAC, but that didn’t stop the Nanooks. They jumped out to an early lead and held onto it the whole game, in the end taking it 30-23.
The Crusaders started to get their feet back under them after the first game and slowly gained the momentum in the second. With the score close the entire game a final kill by senior Allison James sealed the Crusaders victory at 30-26.
The Crusaders ran with the momentum in the third game jumping out to an early 18-9 lead. Nothing seemed to go right for the Nanooks as they managed only a -.040 hitting average and committed 12 errors while the Crusaders took the game 30 -19.
It seemed as though the Crusaders were going to easily take the fourth game as they jumped out to an early 6-6 lead, but the ‘Nooks weren’t going home without a fight. They rallied back to within five points but couldn’t quite overcome the Crusaders who took the game 30-25.
"This team was ranked thrid nationally and we really gave them a run for their money.” Said Sedra Zlock. “The team just pulled together and kept fighting.”
Seniors Jenna Jones and Jessica King both had great nights. Jessica King ended with nine kills, two blocks, and 18 digs, while Jenna Jones ended with 12 digs and two aces.
Afterwards, Shoemaker paid tribute to his two seniors. "They are really solid students and citizens: they are hard workers," he said later in a press release. "We have seen these two people give as much as they can. They came to practice every day, contributed in any way they could. We asked them to play a variety of roles, and they did those things for the good of the team. They have given a lot to this team."
The Nooks have only three games remaining in the season. They hit the road for a game against Western Oregon and then on to Saint Martin’s. They then wrap up their season with a final game against rival Anchorage on Nov. 10.
