Pell Grant increase
UAF students with federal financial aid can look forward to increased Pell Grants to match the tuition hike passed recently. President Bush signed a bill that may make access to college a bit easier for some. The College Cost Reduction and Access Act, signed September 27, increases funding for Federal Pell Grants by more than $11 billion. By 2012, a Pell Grant recipient will be able to receive as much as $5400, about $1100 than the 2007 award. Federal Loan interest rates also will decrease as part of the act, dropping from 6.8 percent currently, to 3.4 percent by 2011. Funding for the bill is coming from a diminished subsidy to other loan providers.
Arctic transformation exhibit
The University of Alaska Museum of the North is showcasing Denise and Samuel Wallace, Alaskan jewelers, in a current exhibit called "Arctic Transformations." Denise, who is part Native, learned her trade from her Aleut grandmother, as well as at a Native art school in New Mexico. The duo is also part of the museum’s permanent collection.
Denise will lecture on her life and work October 24 at the museum. Admission to the traveling exhibit is included in regular museum admission, and the lecture is free to all. Following the lecture, Denise will sign a book written about their work, and the exhibit.
