Aside from not publishing a student’s name and requiring a photo ID to discuss account information, there are other restrictions
which are not listed on registration
forms, the current request to withhold or release directory information form or the registration details page link the registrar’s
web site.
"We wanted to inform students, to ensure
they understood, what it meant to mark their records as confidential." However,
when noted that the current form does not mention the above restrictions, Stickel responded
by saying, "I have asked the university registrar
to update the form and get it out on the web as soon as possible."
If a student chooses not to release their directory information, this includes hometown and participation
in recognized school activities, he or she will not be eligible for enrollment or degree verifications nor can the university verify their attendance or degree for insurance
companies, scholarships or potential employers, according to an e-mail from the UAF office of the registrar.
If an employer or outside university attempts
to verify a student degree or enrollment,
a student who has chosen not to have their directory released are not eligible for this verification. "We won’t even acknowledge you as a student," said Tim Barnett, vice chancellor for student and enrollment services. "No directory information
out means no directory information, period."
"We want to protect the student’s privacy,"
said Stickel. "The student has selected this option and we want to make sure we protect all we can in regards to their records."
"It’s like the university is egging you on to say yes by lot letting students choose what information they wish keep private," said freshman Glenda Agayar.
By choosing to withhold directory information,
students are choosing not to have their name associated with UAF, said Barnett.
Acknowledging yourself as a student to outside entities means consenting to the release of your student information. Students can change their option to allow and deny the university use of their directory
information by filling out the request form located in the registrar’s office.
